Whole House Weatherization Boot Camp

Weatherization This course examines mechanical system operation, health and safety, air leakage, insulation, client education, and energy use to address problems based on energy economics. Students compile all of the components of the house and assemble them coherently to treat the house as a system, also includes moisture problems, mechanical systems and ductwork, and customer energy use. With this summary, students learn to put together a comprehensive and cost effective package of energy conservation measures.
General construction, blower door, housing and auditing backgrounds are beneficial.

Course Length & Level: 5 days, beginner.

The Blower Door & Real World Pressure Diagnostics

This two-part course is designed to teach the set up, operation and interpretation of testing done with the Minneapolis Blower Door.

Part 1: The Basics: What is a blower door, set up and calibration, how a test is conducted, and what the results mean.

Course Length & Level: 1 day, beginner.

Part 2: Blower Door Diagnostics: Emphasis is placed on diagnostic analysis, pressure and thermal boundaries, and the house to attic, crawlspace, and garage connections. Students should know how to set-up and operate a blower door.

Course Length & Level: 1 day, advanced.

Residential Insulation For Results

Man working This overview of residential insulation covers the various types, locations, and applications found in most homes today. Attention is paid to the theory of heat transfer and how insulation can serve as a thermal and an air infiltration barrier. As advocates of cellulose as both an insulation and air sealing product (and for environmental reasons), we focus on the installation of this recycled material in attics and sidewalls. Time will be devoted to the types, operation and maintaince of insulation blowers, and the preparation of attics and walls in retrofit situations. The use of roll and batt type materials in crawlspaces, rim joists, and some wall applications is covered.

Course Length & Level: 3 days, beginner.

Carbon Monoxide And Venting

This course is for the experienced furnace technician needing help in diagnosing and remedying combustion problems. Beginning with the theory of the combustion process and what to normally expect, the classroom discussion will also cover carbon monoxide (CO) dangers and symptoms. A working furnace is used to create CO, while showing how to test for and discern the cause, including O2 and CO2 measurements, gas pressure, BTU input and steady state efficiency. The driving forces of venting and the proper operation of naturally venting appliances are also covered.

Course Length & Level: 2 days, advanced.
